UBC Aboriginal MD Graduates Class of 2016

May 26, 2016 – This year, the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Aboriginal MD admissions program graduated eight students. The graduates were acknowledged at a special gathering at the UBC First Nations Longhouse on May 24, attended by families, friends and supporters.

The event, emceed by James Andrew, Aboriginal Student Initiatives Coordinator, included speakers Warner Adam, First Nations Heath Authority and First Nations Health Council, Dr John Pawlovich, rural doctor, Linc Kesler, director of the First Nations House of Learning, and Dr Todd Alec, Class of 2016.

This year’s graduating class included:

  • Dr Todd Alec, Nak’azdli Nation, Family Practice in Prince George
  • Dr Nathan Teegee, Takla Lake Nation, Dermatology in Vancouver
  • Dr Lara Des Roches, Metis Nation, Sabbatical Masters in Ethics
  • Dr Geoffrey Johnson, Metis Nation, Obstetrics & Gynecology in Victoria
  • Dr David Shepherd, Cree Nation, Family Practice in Prince George
  • Dr Michael Bergunder, Metis Nation, Family Practice in Red Deer
  • Dr Travis Thompson, Metis Nation, Family Practice in Penticton
  • Dr Patricia Caddy, Winnebago Sioux, Family Practice in Nanaimo

To date, the faculty has graduated 62 doctors under the program, with 44 currently enrolled, including seven entering this August.
